Junior Guide – how to find the right golf equipment for your junior

Do you have a golf-crazy youngster at home? Then this guide is for you! Our expert Johan Blom explains which clubs are good to start with, where to begin looking in our extensive range of junior products, and what accessories are needed when starting out.

How to get started?

– My best advice is to keep it simple in the beginning. Take a golf club and head to the nearest driving range, practice area, or even just a park and let your child swing freely and get started on their own. Don't focus too much on how to grip or swing initially. Simply being in a golf environment and having fun is usually a really good start.

Which clubs are needed?

– There are two paths to take here. The first path is buying clubs individually, starting with a 7-iron or 9-iron. Whatever you prefer. Then you can test and build your set from there. One advantage might be choosing a club with more loft, making it easier to get the ball airborne. The second path, and perhaps the most popular one, is to invest in a junior club set. It contains all the essential clubs needed to start a golfing career.

Junior Sets

– The Open junior sets come in four different sizes and are suitable for juniors from 3 to 14 years old. For every junior set sold from Open, we also donate 100 kronor to the Children's Cancer Foundation. We also have sets from well-known brands like Cobra and Callaway if you prefer those.

What length should the clubs be?

– Children are very good at adapting. If a club is slightly too long, you can easily solve this by choking down on the grip, but generally, it's better to have a slightly shorter club. It becomes easier to swing and achieve good ball contact. A good rule of thumb, just like for adult golfers, is to use the 7-iron in the set as a reference and ensure its length reaches just below waist height. When the child starts approaching 160 cm in height, it's time to start looking at ladies' clubs. The length and shaft flex of ladies' clubs are a good next step for juniors, both boys and girls. If you're still unsure, you can always get help from our skilled staff, either in our stores or through customer service.

Right or Left-Handed?

  • The child should naturally do what feels most comfortable, but approximately 80% of all golfers play right-handed. The advantages of this include a wider selection of clubs, and most golf instructors are more experienced with right-handed players. However, there's no right or wrong - I'm left-handed myself, so it's simply about doing what feels most natural.

What accessories are needed?

  • There's quite a range to choose from. Golf shoes can be beneficial for getting proper grip on the ground, golf-specific clothing is most comfortable to swing in, and a glove ensures you get the perfect grip. Of course, none of these are absolutely necessary when first starting out - you can update your equipment as your interest in golf grows.

New Release: Garmin J1

  • New for 2026, Garmin has released a junior watch with design and features tailored for children and young people. It naturally includes distance measurements and clear course information, just like an adult's watch, but also features such as recommended playing pace. It's available in both dark blue and light purple.
